Leaf Underside - Light green - soft fine hairs Stem - Hollow - If you really want to get fancy - Glaucous (covered with whitish glaze). Glabrous - (not hairy). Collect Joe-pye- weed seeds (achenes) in the fall when they are light and fluffy
Stratifying Seeds
Harvesting Seed - Wait until flowers turn brown before collecting seed. Either plant outside or allow to dry in paper bag before storing.
Outdoors - Seed harvested in late fall is placed in a well-drained flat. Since seed needs light to germinate, it is best not to cover will soil. Cover flat with protective layer like glass, this will to protect seedlings in the spring from heavy rain. Seeds needs light in order to germinate, don't cover with soil when sowing seeds.
