Stratifying Seeds
Harvesting Seed - Wait until flowers turn brown before collecting seed. Either plant outside or allow to dry in paper bag before storing.
Outdoors - Seed harvested in late fall is placed in a well-drained flat. Since seed needs light to germinate, it is best not to cover will soil. Cover flat with protective layer like glass, this will to protect seedlings in the spring from heavy rain. Seeds need light in order to germinate; try not to cover with soil when sowing seeds. I have had the most success stratifying Joe-pye-weeds out doors during the winter.
Storage In refrigerator - Moist Cold - 30 days - Small Zip lock plastic bag with a few tablespoons of moistened vermiculite
Day Temperature - 64 - 65° F - Under florescent lights Seeds require cold, moist storage and light in order to germinate
